The one button attack might seem like a way to open up gameplay, but it basically destroyed magic use, which is one of the strongest and most fun aspects of Fable. Thirdly, Fable 3 has got to sort out the control system. The idea of emotional engagement is fine, but the problem was only a complete idiot gamer would sacrifice their dog because it’s such an important gameplay mechanic, so the decision to be “good” or “evil” really wasn’t open to you, unless you’re happy to spoil DLC and further adventuring. It just didn’t engage enough, possibly because it was trying out so many new ideas.
Secondly, Fable 2 lost some of the charm of Fable 1 and I want to see that back in Fable 3. Basically, we like to use them and feel powerful, and Fable 2 didn’t allow us that. While, I think that narratively it made sense, it seemed to forget that in RPGs, when gamers have built up their skills and powers, they like a big battle at the end where they can throw it all against some big bad. So, while the story was better, that ending really irked some people. I suspect that it will return in Fable 3. Peter Molyneux has already said that there’s more DLC on the way for Fable 2, which will continue the Spite and Teresa storyline, but I don’t think DLC will finish The Spire. The Understone Quest Pack will be available now.When Fable 2 came out it scored 90+% and won gold awards (including in our own 360Zine), and it deserved to, but now enough time has passed since playing the game through, I can see some of what was wrong in Fable 2 and what I hope will be focussed on in Fable 3.įirstly, the story in Fable 2 was much stronger than the original Fable, so I’d hope Fable 3 continues this. It certainly gives you a decent excuse to jump back into the game again, and we certainly wouldn't mind having more bite-sized DLC like this if it were to arrive on a regular basis. It's a six round battle against waves of enemies, and is pretty easy to notch up high scores if you spam magic.Īll three are fairly short-lived, but since it works out at just over a pound per quest and adds new weapons and achievements, it's a good enough deal. Elsewhere Reaver's mansion now allows you to play the Wheel Of Misfortune at your leisure, once again with commentary from Stephen Fry and Jonathan Ross. Although it's easy to snap to targets with the left trigger and let rip, achieving the highest scores will take a number of attempts. The Mercenary Camp now contains a Shooting Range, not unlike the one seen in Fable II, complete with high-powered weaponry as prizes. The other two quests revamp existing areas for a few fun mini-games. It annoyingly isn't added to the map either, which makes repairs and other management a bit of a bother. Once the quest is done there's not a lot to do in Understone - the town itself is pretty unique but very small, and offers nothing but a few more houses and businesses to buy and rent out.
FABLE 3 FREE DLC SERIES
The quest is a bit pedestrian you encounter a series of 'security systems' on your way through the caverns, which are waves of undead hobs and wolves, and culminates in a boss fight against a new mechanical beast that's a bit of a pushover.Īt the end you're given a moral choice that's pretty lukewarm, one that's financially motivated and as such a bit of a no-brainer to make a decision on, especially if you've amassed tons of cash throughout the game. The headlining quest is The Voice, which sees you travel to Bowerstone Industrial and investigate mysterious noises underneath a warehouse originating from a subterranean town hidden underneath the city itself.
The Understone Quest Pack adds three missions that are automatically added to your Quest Log upon downloading, and can be tackled in any order, one of which adding a brand new area to explore. Unsurprisingly it's a little light on content, but is a welcome addition considering the budget price point of 400 Microsoft Points (£3.40). It's barely been out a month and we've already been treated to the first DLC pack for Lionhead's Fable III.
